"Spring into Gardening" Lecture Series

DEER RESISTANT PLANTS AND PLANTING DESIGN - Is Bambi devouring your garden?

A group of white tailed deer is a beautiful sight as they pass through the garden.  Unfortunately, due to their burgeoning population, they are no longer just passing through.  Many deer populations call our suburban areas home and they are calling your ornamental plantings and gardens dinner.  This program will offer plant suggestions and design strategies to help you keep a beautiful garden and landscape amidst the deer.  All are welcome and will benefit from the insights provided, from the casual home gardener to the professional landscape designer.  Refreshments will be served.

NATIVE PLANTS FOR YOUR ORNAMENTAL GARDEN

The list of benefits derived from planting species of plants and ornamental grasses that are native to this area is long and compelling.  They have adapted to this climate over time and are often hardier and more disease resistant than plants from other parts of the globe.  These adaptations lead to less maintenance and chemicals to keep them looking great.  They have also coexisted with the insect’s native to this region and provide larval host to many of these beneficial insects we love to see in our gardens.   And in addition to these other benefits, many of these native plants are absolutely stunning!  This program will discuss the many regionally native plants that are worthy of a spot in our ornamental gardens.  Refreshments will be served.

TOUGH PLANTS FOR UNUSUAL SITUATIONS

The perfect planting site; sunny, well-drained, rich loamy soil, sheltered from harsh winds, we all have that right?  In reality, not so much.   This program will take a look at some of the unconventional situations we face in our gardens and yards and how to “green” them.  Plants that can handle the tough spots and thrive, plants for shady locations, plants for wet locations and plants for those just plain weird spots that we find in our gardens that leave us scratching our heads.  Let’s get together and think outside of the horticultural box.  Refreshments will be served.
