About the Dig In! Grant Process
After the Letter of Inquiry is submitted, City Green will reach out to eligible grantees to schedule a site visit at the proposed garden location. At the site visit, City Green staff will determine if the location is suitable for a sustainable community garden. Qualifying sites will have at least 6 - 8 hours of sunlight, a safe, level site, potential for water access, and minimal flood risk. Sites deemed suitable for a garden will then receive a grant application due December 6th. Grant notification is in January 2024 and grant delivery is between March and May 2025. If there is an existing community garden, City Green will onboard the garden project into the Dig In! program and work with the garden team to see how grant funding can best support the existing project.
First-time Municipal Applicants are eligible to receive up to $5,000 dollars in funding with a 50% match to prepare the site and construct their own community garden. Leading up to the garden installation, the City Green team will be available to meet with your garden committee to discuss garden plans, administration, and building community support and involvement.

Second-time Municipal Applicants with established gardens are eligible for up to $2,000 of funding with a 50% match and Multi-Year Applicants are eligible for up to $1,000 of funding with a 50% match.

Grant Evaluation Criteria
Applications will be reviewed and evaluated with special attention to the following categories: 1) Capacity for Food Production, 2) Community and Municipal Engagement, 3) Project Sustainability. Returning applicants will also be evaluated on project success demonstrated through garden photos and participant testimonials.
