Dig In!

About Dig In!

 

The Dig In! Program is a partnership between Passaic County and City Green. Dig In! supports the creation of vibrant community gardens and neighborhood farms in urban, suburban, and rural areas of Passaic County for the production of healthy food, neighborhood beautification, and community enhancement. Dig In! provides participants with access to plants, garden infrastructure, garden supplies, funding, educational workshops and consultation all in support of successful and sustainable garden projects.​ Dig In! Grants are available to eligible Passaic County groups and municipalities.

Weasel Brook Park & Dundee Island Community Gardens

City Green, in partnership with Passaic County, supports and administers two community gardens: The Weasel Brook Community Garden located in Weasel Brook Park in Clifton, and Dundee Island Community Garden located in Dundee Island Park in Passaic.  These public gardens are vital in providing access to healthy food while creating green, beautiful spaces for Passaic County residents to take pleasure in.

Check back in Spring of 2025 to fill out an application to join the

Weasel Brook Park or Dundee Island Community Garden. 

This grant supplies 

  • Daffodil bulbs

  • Native trees

  • Native Perennial Plants 

to eligible municipalities or community groups in Passaic County to be installed by grant recipients in the fall that they are received. Native perennial packages are only eligible for returning partners with past grant success.  This program supports community organizations, faith-based organizations, municipal “adopt-a-lot” programs, garden clubs, youth-serving organizations, and enthusiastic community members in Passaic County. This grant is currently closed for the 2024 season. Please check back in Spring of 2025 for the new application. 

Community Garden Grants for Organizations & Municipalities 

The Dig In! Community Garden Grant supports community groups, organizations, and municipalities in Passaic County looking to start and sustain public community gardens for the production of food and community enhancement.​​​​

New Community Gardens for Organizations 

You or your group are interested in starting a new community garden

or re-starting an inactive community garden in Passaic County.  â€‹

About the Dig In! Community Garden Grant ​

The Dig In! Program provides NEW Community Gardens with funding up to $3,000 plus a 15% in-kind match from your organization, or a City Green garden installation of up to $3,000 value.

If your project receives a Dig In! Grant, City Green staff are available to support your project in the following ways:

  • Provide a 1.5 hour Garden 101 Training

  • Offer additional educational workshops at the community garden, including workshops on garden planning, vegetable gardening, healthy soil, natural pest management, and more

  • Provide ongoing technical support, a lending library of tools, web-based resources, and Dig In! email newsletters

  • Provide discounts at our annual vegetable plant sale each spring and City Green workshops

  • Support coordination of volunteer support at the garden

  • Lend tools from our tool lending library​

Timeline

  • New Community Gardens must submit a Letter of Inquiry before October 4th, 2024

  • New Community Gardens will undergo a site visit prior to being invited to complete a full application. Full applications are open from October 7th - November 15th

  • Grant award notification: January 15th

  • Grant delivery: March - May 2025

  • Grant report deadline: November 2025

Eligibility â€‹

All projects must be

  • Food-producing gardens

  • Located in Passaic county 

  • Have a minimum of three adults committed to their project

  • Have a level site with at least 6-8 hours of sunlight and water access within 100 feet

The Following Entities are ineligible for the Dig In! Community Garden Grant Program:
